TikTok drives STEM learning across Sub-Saharan Africa
TikTok is increasingly being used as an educational tool across Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content. Research conducted by GWI between Q1 and Q4 2025 in Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya indicates a significant interest in technology among the platform's users.
In Nigeria, 72% of TikTok users expressed interest in technology, while 61% of users in South Africa and 56% in Kenya showed similar interest. In both South Africa and Kenya, TikTok users were notably more likely to be interested in technology compared to non-users. Interest in science was also recorded at 31% in Nigeria, 35% in South Africa, and 31% in Kenya.
To address this demand, TikTok has implemented a dedicated STEM Feed to surface short, conversational videos that explain technical concepts. This trend is supported by the #LearnOnTikTok hashtag, which has surpassed 51 million video creations. Much of this educational content is driven by independent creators who use various methods, such as music, dance, or simplified problem-solving, to make learning more accessible to young audiences.
