TikTok becomes top travel inspiration source for Gen Z
A study by TUI Musement conducted in Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom reveals that social media is fundamentally reshaping travel habits. TikTok has emerged as the primary source of travel inspiration for 48% of Generation Z respondents, surpassing traditional recommendations from friends and family, which stood at 43%.
Short-form video content is driving significant booking behaviors. Approximately 43% of all travelers reported booking a trip or activity after seeing a viral post or video. This trend is particularly strong among Millennials, with 52% influenced by viral content, compared to 50% of Gen Z. Additionally, 43% of respondents follow travel influencers to help decide their destinations and activities, and 27% have changed their intended destination based on an influencer's recommendation.
The influence of social media extends to the travel experience itself. About 39% of travelers visit specific locations primarily to capture photos or videos for social media. Furthermore, 45% of Gen Z travelers feel pressure to ensure their holidays 'look good' online, reflecting the growing impact of visual platforms like Instagram and TikTok on consumer decision-making.
