TikTok faces scrutiny over Chinese government influence

TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, face ongoing scrutiny regarding their relationship with the Chinese government. Because ByteDance is headquartered in Beijing, critics argue that the Communist Party of China (CPC) exerts significant control over the platform.

Concerns have been raised regarding politically motivated censorship and the platform's algorithm, which some claim boosts content favorable to the Beijing regime. These issues have led to official investigations in the United States, with the FBI expressing concerns over national security risks in 2022. Additionally, Taiwan banned TikTok on public devices in 2022 due to similar security considerations.
