TikTok faces scrutiny over medical misinformation and AI safety
Research presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics 2026 National Conference & Exhibition highlights the prevalence of medical misinformation on TikTok. A study of 53 short-form videos regarding the alleged link between prenatal acetaminophen use and autism found that 28.3% contained misinformation, while only 52.8% aligned with scientific evidence. Clinicians have noted an increase in pregnant patients questioning medication safety due to these social media trends.
In response to broader concerns regarding digital safety and AI-generated content, TikTok has introduced new features including an AI Literacy Hub. In the Philippines, this hub is available in Filipino to help users identify AI-generated content. These developments come amid legislative discussions in the United States regarding age restrictions for social media use to protect younger users from repetitive or low-quality content.
