TikTok influences teenage eating habits and cravings, study finds
A study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior has examined how TikTok influences the eating habits and cravings of teenagers. Researchers at the University of Minnesota conducted focus groups with a diverse group of high school students, many from lower-income backgrounds, to understand the platform's impact.
The findings indicate that food-related content on TikTok—including trends, recipes, restaurant reviews, and influencer posts—can quickly trigger hunger and an urge to try new foods. Some adolescents reported changing their eating habits to emulate the diets of influencers they trust based on physical appearance.
The study also noted the role of parental involvement, finding that when parents are physically present or encourage family time, teenagers tend to use the app less. This research arrives amid broader legal and regulatory scrutiny regarding social media's impact on youth, including legal challenges against Meta in the US and investigations into TikTok's content rules in Europe.
