TikTok pea salad trend causes digestive issues for user
A viral TikTok trend known as ‘pea propaganda’ has gained popularity, with influencers like Raven Ross promoting pea salads as a way to ‘fibermaxx’ meals. The trend involves using peas as a primary base for salads rather than traditional leafy greens, often incorporating proteins like chicken, salmon, or tofu.
While peas offer nutritional benefits, including a combination of fiber and plant-based protein, a columnist attempting a week-long challenge reported abandoning the diet after only two days. Despite feeling full and maintaining stable energy, the author experienced significant bloating and gastrointestinal discomfort caused by the high volume of fiber and FODMAPs.
Registered dietitian Frances Largeman-Roth advises that while peas are nutritious, consuming large quantities can trigger gas and abdominal pain. Experts recommend limiting servings to a half-cup or one cup per meal and suggesting that peas be paired with leafy greens like arugula or kale rather than serving as the sole vegetable base.
