TikTok Shop and the rise of unified commerce
The rise of social commerce, driven significantly by platforms like TikTok Shop, is shifting retail behavior toward integrated shopping experiences. TikTok Shop allows users to complete transactions directly within the app via videos, livestreams, or dedicated shop tabs, reducing cart abandonment by eliminating the need for third-party redirects. As of 2026, the service is available in the US, UK, most of Southeast Asia, and select European markets such as Ireland and Spain.
This shift is pushing retailers away from traditional omnichannel models toward unified commerce. While omnichannel involves appearing across multiple channels, it often relies on disconnected software systems that can lead to inventory discrepancies and fulfillment errors. In contrast, unified commerce integrates all selling paths into a single, continuous record. This ensures that inventory, customer data, and pricing remain consistent across websites, social media feeds, and physical stores, reducing the operational strain caused by managing multiple independent commerce systems.
