TikTok expands Shop to challenge Amazon in US and Europe
TikTok is redesigning its Shop feature to become a major e‑commerce player. Internal targets cited by Bloomberg aim for $17.5 billion in sales, a figure the platform disputes, while it pushes creator incentives and subsidised deliveries to accelerate adoption. The company has lowered merchant fees to 6‑8 % and invested $1.5 billion in a GoTo unit to strengthen logistics, positioning itself against Amazon, Shein and Temu.
The service, already live in the United States, Latin America and several Asian markets, is rolling out across Europe, with launches in Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and a planned debut in Belgium on 15 June. European regulators are scrutinising TikTok Shop over data‑privacy and consumer‑protection concerns, warning that the platform’s broad data‑use clauses could allow transfers outside the EU.
TikTok hopes the integrated shopping experience—live‑shopping, shoppable videos and in‑app boutiques—will convert its highly engaged user base into impulse purchases, offering brands a new sales channel while challenging Amazon’s dominance in online retail.
