TikTok sued in Nigeria over alleged access restrictions
The Foundation for Digital Justice has filed a lawsuit against TikTok Inc. at the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging that the platform has restricted access for millions of users in several Nigerian states.
The suit claims that users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, and Sokoto states have faced significant disruptions since approximately September 11, 2026. According to an affidavit filed by the foundation, the platform became “completely restricted and inaccessible” by September 14. Reported issues include frozen feeds, failure to load videos, and stalled content uploads on standard mobile data connections.
The legal action argues that these restrictions violate constitutional rights to freedom of expression and freedom from discrimination. The foundation is seeking a court order to compel TikTok to restore full access and cease what it describes as arbitrary restrictions that prevent citizens from accessing information and participating in online discourse.
