TikTok to close Nashville office and lay off 250 employees

TikTok is closing its Nashville office and laying off approximately 250 employees as part of a broader restructuring of its U.S. operations. The Nashville location, which occupied significant space on Music Row, served as a hub for content review operations.

The company is shifting toward a greater reliance on artificial intelligence to identify and remove violent or explicit material. While TikTok officials state this move aims to streamline operations and align with long-term growth, the transition has raised concerns regarding the efficacy of automated moderation. Experts and digital rights advocates note that human moderators are often necessary to interpret context, such as slang, sarcasm, and cultural nuances, which AI systems may struggle to understand.

This workforce adjustment follows a major restructuring earlier this year, where TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC took over U.S. operations to comply with federal requirements regarding ByteDance’s control. TikTok currently serves approximately 200 million users in the United States.
