TikTok to require US employees to work in-office five days a week

TikTok has announced that starting in September, most of its employees in the United States will be required to work from the office five days a week. This move marks a significant shift for staff members who previously operated under hybrid schedules that allowed for at least one day of remote work per week.

The company has been preparing for this transition for several months. As early as December last year, TikTok notified teams in product, marketing, and advertising sales to prepare for a full return to the office by 2026. Some departments, such as TikTok Shop, have already been following a five-day in-office requirement for over a year.

This decision aligns TikTok with competitors like Amazon and Instagram, which have also implemented five-day in-office mandates. However, the tech industry remains divided on the issue. While companies like YouTube and Patreon maintain hybrid models requiring three days in the office, others like Spotify continue to offer flexible arrangements, and Dropbox has expressed intentions to maintain a ‘virtual-first’ approach.
