TikTok trends involve looting rumors and e-commerce growth

Social media platform TikTok is seeing two distinct trends: the spread of viral content regarding potential looting and the rapid expansion of its e-commerce capabilities.

In Europe, videos are circulating on TikTok showing individuals displaying luxury goods, such as iPhones and headphones, claiming they were looted during recent unrest in France. Some posts target specific luxury retailers like Rolex and Apple, with certain users suggesting October 31 as a date for potential looting in countries including Spain, Germany, and Portugal. In Germany, online comments have included calls for violence and specific mentions of stores like MediaMarkt and Nike.

Separately, TikTok Shop is experiencing significant commercial growth in Mexico. According to data presented at the D2C Summit Mexico 2026, daily sales on the platform increased 133 times between February 2025 and September 2026. The growth is driven by creator recommendations, tutorials, and live streams, with fashion, electronics, and consumer goods emerging as the primary sales categories.
