TikTok expands in Europe amid shop launch, moderation issues and policy debate

TikTok is broadening its presence across Europe. In Austria, the platform will roll out a TikTok Shop on 15 June, allowing users to purchase products directly from the app. Consumer‑protection groups warn that the integration of e‑commerce with the highly personalized video feed could spur impulsive buying and note that retailer information is often insufficient.

In Lisbon, a Portuguese firm that provides content‑moderation services for TikTok employs mainly young German staff at a base pay of €5 an hour. Moderators review graphic material, such as violent and explicit videos, in a high‑pressure environment, raising concerns about working conditions and the adequacy of safeguards.

Germany is witnessing a heated debate over how to curb the influence of social‑media algorithms. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt rejects outright bans for under‑16 users, urging parental responsibility instead, while several state media authorities propose a “Public‑Value” label that would force platforms to prioritize content deemed socially beneficial. A new book, “Die Brot & Spiele Generation,” argues that AI‑driven recommendation systems intensify user attention capture and diminish critical distance.

Together, these developments illustrate TikTok’s growing commercial footprint, the labor and ethical challenges of moderating its content, and mounting regulatory scrutiny in Europe.
