TikTok’s “early bird dinner” trend linked to better sleep by health experts
A TikTok‑originated “early bird dinner” trend encourages users to have their evening meal between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., claiming it improves sleep quality and supports weight loss. A systematic review cited by the U.S. National Institutes of Health found that eating late near bedtime is consistently associated with longer sleep onset, lower efficiency and more awakenings, while a dinner two to three hours before sleep may aid digestion and circadian alignment.
Nutrition and sleep specialists have weighed in. Dr. Farhan Abdullah of Magnolia Functional Wellness explained, “Going straight to bed after a meal… increases the chances that the food you just ate is still being processed by your body.” Sleep‑medicine specialist Alex Dimitriu called the trend “a rare case where a TikTok trend actually aligns with basic human biology.” Registered dietitian Julia Zumpano added that an earlier dinner lets blood‑sugar levels stabilise and reduces acid‑reflux risk, and suggested a brief walk after eating if a later dinner is unavoidable.
