Tilak Varma leads South Zone to Duleep Trophy final
South Zone captain Tilak Varma led his team to a seven-wicket victory over North Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final, securing a place in the final against East Zone. Varma was named Player of the Match after scoring an unbeaten 116 in the first innings and an unbeaten 51 in the second innings.
Addressing the media, Varma explained the tactical decision to exclude experienced player Karun Nair from the playing XI in favor of Kodimela Himateja. Varma stated the move was intended to provide a left-handed option in the middle order to counter North Zone’s left-arm spinners. While Himateja did not score in the match, Varma defended the decision by noting Himateja’s domestic run record.
Despite his recent rise in international white-ball cricket, Varma emphasized that red-ball cricket remains his primary strength and passion. He noted that his foundation in the longer format has been a constant throughout his career.
