Tilapia identified as high-protein, low-cost alternative to salmon

Tilapia is being highlighted as a highly nutritious and affordable protein source, often referred to as ‘water chicken’ due to its mild flavor and ease of preparation. According to data from the USDA, 100g of cooked tilapia contains approximately 26g of protein, which exceeds the average protein content found in 100g of salmon (approximately 20g).

In terms of cost, tilapia is significantly more economical than imported salmon. While salmon prices can range from 400,000 to 500,000 VND per kg, tilapia is priced between 30,000 and 40,000 VND per kg. Beyond protein, tilapia is low in calories (about 128 calories per 100g) and rich in essential nutrients, including Vitamin B12, Niacin, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Selenium.

Data from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) indicates that tilapia is a top 10 most consumed seafood item in the United States, trailing only shrimp and salmon. It also maintains strong market demand in Europe, Japan, and China.
