Tilburg and Tytsjerksteradiel present 2027 municipal budgets
The municipalities of Tilburg and Tytsjerksteradiel have presented their 2027 budgets, highlighting different regional priorities and financial outlooks.
In Tilburg, the 2027 budget places significant emphasis on the municipal-owned Warmtebedrijf Tilburg (WbT). Established in July 2025, the company aims to provide sustainable heat through geothermal energy to the Stappengoor and Kenniskwartier districts. This initiative is a key component of Tilburg's goal to become a CO2-free municipality within 20 years. The municipal council previously allocated a 17.5 million euro credit for this purpose, with over 6 million euro utilized by May 2026. Current efforts include designing low-temperature networks for new builds and conducting test borings to assess soil capacity for heat storage.
Tytsjerksteradiel has presented a balanced 2027 budget focused on maintaining community services, housing, and economic development. While currently financially healthy, the municipality faces upcoming challenges as revenues from the municipal fund are expected to decrease starting in 2027. This shift will likely lead to budget deficits in subsequent years and higher costs for residents, such as increased waste disposal levies. Alderman Jan Pieter van der Velde noted that the budget serves as a challenge to build a future-proof municipality through careful decision-making.
