Till Backhaus addresses failed whale rescue and cost recovery
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Environment Minister Till Backhaus is addressing the aftermath of a failed whale rescue attempt near the island of Poel. The incident, which involved a stranded humpback whale, has led to a legal and financial dispute involving approximately 140,000 euros that the ministry is seeking to recover from private rescuers.
Backhaus stated that he felt his trust was betrayed by the private rescuers, despite having written agreements and liability waivers in place. He emphasized his responsibility to taxpayers to recover the funds but noted that he is open to a settlement to avoid lengthy court proceedings.
Addressing political implications, Backhaus denied that the rescue attempt was a campaign tactic, asserting that his focus was solely on the animal. He also clarified that Minister President Manuela Schwesig was kept informed throughout the operation, though she did not participate in the physical recovery efforts due to the rapid pace of the event.
