TIM and Qualcomm test Wi-Fi 8 technology in Brazil

TIM and Qualcomm have conducted technological demonstrations of Wi-Fi 8 equipment at the TIM Lab in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The tests utilized an architecture combining the upcoming Wi-Fi 8 standard with XGS-PON fiber optics, alongside residential network management and security features.

Based on the IEEE 802.11bn specification, Wi-Fi 8 shifts focus from purely increasing maximum transmission speeds to prioritizing connection reliability. The standard aims to improve coverage, reduce interference, and optimize spectrum usage, particularly in environments with numerous connected devices.

The demonstration employed Home Gateway Units (HGU) using Qualcomm’s Dragonwing F8 or Dragonwing FiberPro A8 Elite platforms. These devices integrate optical connectivity with advanced features such as Dynamic Subband Operation (DSO) and artificial intelligence to manage interference and expand indoor coverage. TIM stated that this initiative is a validation and learning phase, noting that there is currently no commercial offering and large-scale implementation may take several years.
