Tim Draper warns quantum computers could crack bank encryption before Bitcoin
Investor Tim Draper says that once quantum computers become powerful enough to run algorithms such as Shor's, they will likely break the public‑key encryption used by traditional banks before threatening Bitcoin. He argues that banks rely on decades‑old, layered systems and persistent credentials, creating many points where encrypted data can be harvested now and decrypted later when quantum capacity arrives.
By contrast, Bitcoin’s protocol is globally coordinated and can be upgraded through consensus, allowing a shift to post‑quantum cryptography without a single regulator’s mandate. Nonetheless, exposed public keys on the blockchain could still be vulnerable, and the transition would require broad agreement among developers, miners and users.
