TIM fined €9.5 million by Italy's data protection authority for illegal telemarketing

Italy's data protection authority (Garante per la protezione dei dati personali) imposed a fine of €9,516,000 on telecom operator TIM for a series of privacy and telemarketing violations. Investigations uncovered abusive call‑center practices that used spoofed numbers to disguise callers, targeted users registered on the public opposition list, and collected personal data without proper consent.

The sanction follows roughly 7,000 complaints received in 2025 and includes mandatory corrective actions for TIM, such as strengthening internal controls, simplifying opt‑out procedures, and ensuring full respect for data‑subject rights. The authority also criticised TIM’s failure to monitor its marketing partners and to provide timely responses to access, deletion and opposition requests.
