Tim Hortons history traces back to 1964 hockey star's shop

Tim Hortons, a major Canadian coffee chain, originated in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. The business was founded by Canadian hockey star Tim Horton as a simple coffee and donut shop.

Following Horton’s death in a 1974 car accident, his partner Ron Joyce, who had previously been a franchise owner, took control of the company. Under Joyce’s leadership, the business expanded into a large national chain. The menu has since diversified beyond coffee and donuts to include items such as sandwiches, soups, breakfast foods, and Timbits.

Tim Horton was a prominent defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs, contributing to four Stanley Cup victories during the 1960s. Today, the company remains a staple of Canadian coffee culture, reporting that it serves over 5 million cups of coffee daily within Canada.
