Tim Mandese grows cucuzza squash in Wyoming

Tim Mandese, a graphic artist and photographer from Cheyenne, Wyoming, is reportedly the only person growing cucuzza squash in the state. Cucuzza is an edible heirloom gourd belonging to the bottle gourd family, primarily grown in Sicily.

Growing the squash in Wyoming is considered highly challenging due to the state's short growing season, unpredictable frost, and cool nighttime temperatures. The heat-loving plant requires between 70 and 100 warm days to mature and thrives in soil temperatures consistently above 70°F.

The squash is versatile in cooking and can be prepared as a stew with potatoes and tomatoes, stuffed with meat and herbs, or used in casseroles. Even the young vine ends and leaves are edible when sautéed.
