Country music artist Tim McGraw faced controversy and radio bans following the 2002 release of his single “Red Rag Top,” the first track from his album “Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors.”

Written by Jason White, the song depicts a young couple’s romance and their decision to undergo an abortion after an unplanned pregnancy. Due to the sensitive subject matter, some country radio stations rejected the song entirely, while others in conservative regions exercised caution when playing it.

McGraw addressed the backlash by stating that he expected people to have opinions but maintained that “liking this song doesn’t compromise your integrity.” Songwriter Jason White also noted that while the song contains a reference to abortion, its primary purpose was to tell a story about a failed relationship.
