Tim Minchin discusses music for The Cat In The Hat film

Comedian and songwriter Tim Minchin has discussed his work on the music for the upcoming animated film, ‘The Cat In The Hat’. Based on the 1957 book by Dr. Seuss, the film stars Bill Hader as the title character.

Minchin wrote and performed the film's theme song, aiming to create an ‘earworm banger’ that reflects the character's optimism and energy. While Minchin noted his ability to write emotional music for West End shows like ‘Matilda The Musical’, he described the theme for this adaptation as playful and eclectic rather than narrative or emotional.

The film features an original score by Grammy-winning composer Lorne Balfe. Minchin stated that the new story uses the end of the original book as a starting point but departs significantly from the text to embody the spirit of the film.
