Tim Ream announces retirement from USMNT after 16-year career

Tim Ream, the longtime captain and defender for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), has officially announced his retirement from international soccer. The 38-year-old veteran made the announcement on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during a ceremony in his hometown of St. Louis ahead of a friendly match against Chile.

Ream concludes a distinguished 16-year international career in which he earned 86 caps. His tenure included appearances in the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, where he served as captain during the latter tournament. He also contributed to multiple CONCACAF Gold Cup campaigns and won two CONCACAF Nations League titles.

Citing his age and the emergence of younger talent as primary factors, Ream stated, “The kids are getting younger and younger... It is time to step away from the national team.” While retiring from international duty, Ream will continue to play club soccer for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer (MLS).
