Tim Sweeney criticizes EU proposal to limit online access for minors
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has criticized the proposed ‘EU Kids Act,’ a legislative initiative by the European Commission aimed at strengthening online protections for minors. Sweeney described the proposal as “terrible for the next generation of humanity,” arguing that strict limitations on online video games, social networks, video platforms, and AI chatbots could deprive young people of essential digital tools.
Sweeney emphasized that modern applications and games serve as contemporary creative outlets, comparing them to the “brushes and treehouses of yesterday.” He noted that platforms like Fortnite Creative and Roblox Studio allow youth to develop digital skills, socialize, and build experiences, rather than just consuming entertainment.
The draft proposal suggests that individuals aged 15 and older could create accounts independently. Those aged 13 and 14 might use introductory accounts under parental supervision with stricter limitations, while children aged 3 to 12 would have profiles entirely managed by adults, restricted to age-appropriate services. The stated goal of the EU initiative is to reduce exposure to harmful content, addictive design systems, and potential exploitation.
