Tim Walz Youth Leadership and Success Summit Rochester Minnesota student leadership Kim Norton

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered a keynote address at the Youth Leadership and Success Summit in Rochester. The event, held at the Mayo Civic Center and Historic Chateau Theatre, was designed for high school students in Olmsted County to explore leadership, democratic systems, and career pathways.

During his speech, Walz encouraged students to become problem-solvers and engage in public life, noting that they will shape the future of their communities. He specifically addressed the challenges of the digital age, suggesting that younger generations are uniquely positioned to navigate technologies like artificial intelligence. He also expressed skepticism regarding the ability of older legislators to manage AI policy.

The summit, part of Mayor Kim Norton’s ‘Year About Youth’ initiative, also emphasized mental wellbeing as a foundation for success. Other speakers included Dr. Mohamed Ahmed from Winona State University and Dr. Lawrence Jacobs from the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance. To accommodate the event and staff development, the Rochester Public School District scheduled no classes for students on the day of the summit.
