Timber Fire burns 5,526 acres near Big Sur
The Timber Fire, burning in the rugged wilderness of Monterey County near Big Sur and the Ventana Wilderness, has consumed approximately 5,526 acres. As of August 19, 2026, Cal Fire officials reported a containment level of 24%.
The fire, which began on August 8, has led to various emergency responses. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office recently downgraded three evacuation orders to evacuation warnings for zones north of the fire, though other orders and warnings remain in effect.
Local impacts include significant smoke concerns. At Tassajara, leadership has canceled retreats due to fluctuating air quality and has restricted new student arrivals since August 11. While the fire does not currently pose a direct threat to the Tassajara area, officials continue to monitor the situation closely alongside professional wildland firefighters.
