Timber Fire expands to over 12,000 acres in Monterey County

The Timber Fire in Monterey County, California, has expanded to over 12,000 acres. Originating on August 8 in the Los Padres National Forest, the blaze has moved into the Big Sur and Ventana Wilderness areas.

As of recent reports, the fire has reached approximately 25% containment. The rapid growth in acreage is attributed to critically low fuel moisture, high temperatures, low humidity, and difficult terrain. While the fire has expanded up mountain slopes, containment lines on the southern and western sides have protected homes and businesses in Big Sur from damage.

Evacuation orders remain active for several zones, and warnings persist for a 40-mile stretch of Highway 1. Although Highway 1 has reopened to traffic, authorities urge caution. Additionally, the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center has canceled summer programming and evacuated guests and staff due to heavy smoke and poor air quality.
