Big Sur Timber Fire forces evacuations and Highway 1 closures

The Timber Fire is burning through the Los Padres National Forest in Big Sur, California, consuming over 2,400 acres with only 5% containment. The blaze, which ignited Saturday night southeast of Loma Vista, is moving through steep, rugged terrain, complicating efforts for the hundreds of firefighters on the scene.

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for several zones in Monterey County, affecting residents and iconic landmarks including the Henry Miller Memorial Library, Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, Alila Ventana Big Sur, and Nepenthe. All state parks in the Big Sur area, including Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Parks, are closed. A 16-mile stretch of Highway 1 has been closed between Point Sur Lighthouse and Partington Canyon.

Smoke from the fire is expected to drift into the South and East Bay, prompting air quality advisories from the Bay Area Air District. Authorities have urged visitors to avoid the region to keep roadways clear for emergency responders. An evacuation shelter has been established at Carmel Middle School.
