Timber industry developments in Gobernador Virasoro, Argentina

In Gobernador Virasoro, Corrientes, the timber industry faces both expansion challenges and efforts toward plant reactivation.

Acon Timber is evaluating the second stage of its plant expansion following an initial investment of approximately US$130 million. Nicolás Crisp, president of the company in Argentina, stated that the project's continuity depends on improving competitiveness and structural conditions. He highlighted high logistics costs for transporting production to export ports as a major disadvantage compared to competitors in Brazil and Uruguay. If successful, the expansion would increase processing capacity from 700,000 cubic meters to 1.3 million cubic meters annually.

Separately, Forestal Tapebicuá has restored three-phase electricity following a judicial ruling. This marks the beginning of a three-month trial period to prepare the facilities for potential full reactivation. The plant has been paralyzed since August 2025, resulting in the dismissal of 520 workers. The judicial intervention plans a gradual reactivation, starting with the remanufacturing sector, funded by the sale of wood surpluses and scrap metal. Efforts are also underway to settle tax debts to restore social security coverage for workers' families.
