Timbiriche series sparks controversy over identity use and abuse allegations
The release of the Timbiriche biographical series on the ViX streaming platform has sparked significant controversy involving the band's former members and producer Luis de Llano. Original members, including Sasha Sokol, Benny Ibarra, and Alix Bauer, issued a joint statement distancing themselves from the production, noting they were not consulted and did not authorize the use of their names, voices, or identities.
The series, described by executive producer Pablo Cruz as a work of fiction based on extensive research, addresses the band's rise to fame and the controversial legal case involving allegations of sexual abuse by Luis de Llano against Sasha Sokol when she was a minor. This case has previously resulted in a conviction ratified by Mexico's Supreme Court.
In response to the premiere, Luis de Llano released a statement through his legal team to disclaim any responsibility for the series' narrative and to oppose the unauthorized and lucrative use of his image. He indicated he would not make further public comments while legal proceedings are ongoing. Meanwhile, Sokol's legal team is reportedly evaluating whether the series' portrayal of her experiences constitutes revictimization, which could lead to further legal action.
