Timehri Prison launches shade house for inmate rehabilitation

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has launched a fully operational shade house at Timehri Prison to enhance food production and inmate rehabilitation. The facility utilizes UV-resistant plastic roofing and insect mesh to create a controlled environment for efficient crop cultivation, protecting plants from harsh weather while teaching climate-smart, sustainable agricultural techniques.

This initiative is part of a broader government effort to provide inmates with practical skills to promote self-sufficiency and reduce recidivism rates. Similar agricultural technologies are being implemented at the New Amsterdam and Mazaruni prisons to expand food production across the prison system.

Agricultural programs are currently active at the Mazaruni, Lusignan, New Amsterdam, and Timehri prisons. Mazaruni Prison specifically hosts the nation’s largest prison farm, which includes crop cultivation, livestock rearing, aquaculture, and beekeeping. These programs aim to foster responsibility and independence in inmates to support their successful reintegration into society.
