Times Higher Education releases 2027 World University Rankings

Times Higher Education (THE) has released its World University Rankings 2027, evaluating 2,297 institutions across 118 countries and territories. The rankings assess universities based on 18 indicators across five dimensions: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

The University of Oxford retains its position as the world's top university for the 11th consecutive year. It is closely followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place, with Princeton University and Stanford University sharing third. The top ten remains dominated by traditional institutions from the United Kingdom and the United States.

A significant trend in this edition is the rising influence of Asian universities. Tsinghua University in China has risen to 11th place, surpassing ETH Zurich, marking the first time a Chinese university has outranked the top institution from mainland Europe. Other notable Asian institutions include Peking University (13th) and the National University of Singapore (15th).

Regional highlights include the expansion of sub-Saharan African representation, with 69 institutions included, and the University of Cape Town returning to the top 150. In Turkey, Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) emerged as the top-ranked national institution, while Erciyes University achieved a significant jump of 316 places. In Japan, the University of Tokyo ranked 27th, while in Vietnam, Duy Tan University led the national group in the 701-800 band.
