Times Car data breach leaks 6.6 million accounts and 1.6 million driver's licenses
Times Mobility, the operator of the car-sharing service Times Car, has reported a massive data breach involving approximately 6.6 million user accounts following unauthorized access to its web systems. Of these accounts, roughly 1.6 million involved the leak of highly sensitive identity verification documents, including images of driver's licenses, residence certificates, and student IDs.
The breach has triggered significant public concern regarding identity theft and financial fraud. In response, the Japan Credit Information Reference Center (JICC) reported a surge in applications from consumers seeking to prevent the fraudulent use of their leaked information, which forced the organization to temporarily suspend its smartphone app due to the high volume of requests.
Legal action is also mobilizing. Attorney Yuki Makino has launched a dedicated website to organize a collective lawsuit against the company. As of October 1, nearly 3,000 individuals have registered their intent to participate. Makino emphasized that the scale of the leak, particularly the exposure of driver's licenses, makes this a matter that requires more than just a corporate apology.
