Times Square: History and evolution of Manhattan's iconic hub

Times Square, located at the intersection of Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, serves as a major urban hub characterized by dense high-rise architecture and extensive neon signage.

Historically known as Longacre Square during the 19th century, the area was originally defined by horse trading and simple commercial buildings. The location underwent a significant transformation in 1904 when publisher Adolph Ochs moved the headquarters of ‘The New York Times’ to the newly constructed Times Building. Following this move, the area was renamed Times Square.

The development of the subway system beneath the intersection further established the site as a critical transportation node. Today, the area is recognized for its complex streetscape, tiered rooflines from various construction eras, and its role as a central ecosystem for the Broadway theater district.
