Timiș air quality affected by wildfire smoke from Serbia and local fires

Air quality in the Timiș region of Romania has been impacted by smoke from massive vegetation fires in Serbia and a local fire in Săcălaz. The Timiș Environmental Protection Agency reported temporary exceedances of PM10 particulate matter levels during the early hours of Saturday, August 22, specifically at monitoring stations in Carani, Zona Soarelui, Calea Aradului, and Moravița.

Medical experts warn that wildfire smoke poses significant health risks even to healthy individuals. The smoke contains fine particles (PM2.5) that can penetrate deep into the lungs and reach the alveoli, as well as toxic carbon monoxide. Symptoms of exposure can include eye, nose, and throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness. Carbon monoxide poisoning may lead to headaches, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Individuals with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, such as asthma or COPD, face a higher risk of severe exacerbations requiring hospitalization.
