APC denies alleged plot to assassinate Atiku Abubakar
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has dismissed allegations that the Nigerian government is plotting to assassinate Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. The denial follows claims made by Timi Frank, a former APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary and current ADC member, who alleged that the government intends to intimidate or undermine Atiku’s political participation.
Frank has appealed to international bodies, including the United Nations, the African Union, and United States President Donald Trump, to intervene diplomatically and ensure the safety of opposition leaders in Nigeria. He expressed concerns regarding the potential use of state institutions, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to target political opponents.
In response, APC spokesperson Dele Alake characterized the claims as “typical opposition rabble-rousing” and challenged Frank to provide evidence to security agencies. The APC stated that Atiku’s security arrangements have not been compromised and that he continues to receive protection from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS). The council noted that President Bola Tinubu has recently directed security agencies to increase protection for all major political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
