Timing of sugar consumption affects blood glucose levels

Research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolism suggests that the timing of sugar and carbohydrate consumption can significantly impact blood glucose fluctuations. A study involving 17 healthy young women found that consuming a sweet meal, such as a cake, in the mid-afternoon resulted in more favorable glucose responses compared to consuming the same meal after dinner.

The study noted that the larger glucose fluctuations observed after evening consumption were also detectable the following morning. These variations are linked to the body's circadian rhythm, which influences metabolic processes throughout a 24-hour cycle.

While timing plays a role, experts emphasize that overall diet quality remains crucial. Harvard Health recommends pairing carbohydrates with proteins or healthy fats to slow glucose release and promote satiety, rather than focusing solely on the time of day.
