Timișoara Botanical Park hosts controversial LGBTQ+ art installation
An art installation titled ‘The Bench’ has sparked public debate in Timișoara’s Botanical Park as part of the Beta Biennial of Architecture. Created by Spanish architect and artist Carlos Pena, the work consists of four benches covered in black vinyl and iron chains, referencing the aesthetic of leather gay clubs.
The project aims to explore how darker, secluded areas of the park were historically used by the LGBTQ+ community for discreet meetings. Organizers stated that the installation serves as an homage to the role such spaces played in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals and is intended to reflect how public spaces are used in reality beyond their formal design.
In response to negative public reactions, the Beta Biennial organizers clarified that the work represents the artist’s personal perspective and does not constitute an official position of the Timișoara City Hall or the Order of Architects in Romania. They emphasized that the installation is temporary, was placed with the necessary permits, and does not aim to encourage specific sexual behaviors in public spaces.
