Timișoara marks 310 years since Habsburg victory over Ottoman Empire
October 18 marks the 310th anniversary of the triumphal entry of Prince Eugene of Savoy into Timișoara in 1716. This event ended 164 years of Ottoman rule and initiated the city's transformation into a modern European center.
Following the military victory, the Habsburg administration undertook a radical reconstruction of the city. Under the coordination of military engineers and Governor Claudius Florimund Mercy, the settlement was rebuilt with an orthogonal street plan, Baroque architecture, and advanced Vauban-style fortifications. The engineering of the Bega River into a navigable canal further integrated the region into European economic networks.
Due to its historical significance, the Timișoara Local Council officially designated October 18 as a local importance day in 2011.
