Timișoara metropolitan area announces transport and infrastructure upgrades

Significant infrastructure and transport updates are underway in the Timișoara metropolitan area. Starting August 17, 2026, the Timișoara Public Transport Society (STPT) will introduce modern electric vehicles on metropolitan routes M3 and M32, connecting Timișoara with Giroc and Chișoda.

In Giroc, road traffic on Calea Timișoarei (DJ 595) will be closed for approximately three months starting August 18, 2026. The Timiș County Council is conducting modernization works, including road rehabilitation and the construction of two roundabouts. This closure will necessitate traffic diversions and temporary changes to public bus routes.

Additionally, two bids have been submitted for the ‘Green Magistrale’ project in Timișoara. This 158.3 million lei investment, partially funded by the EU, aims to transform Calea Șagului and Bulevardul 16 Decembrie 1989 into a modern mobility corridor. The project includes prioritizing public transport, reorganizing traffic, expanding green spaces, and adding five kilometers of bicycle paths. Construction is expected to conclude by March 2029.
