Timișoara Revolution Memorial president warns against political use of 1989 history

Gino Rado, president of the Timișoara Revolution Memorial, has criticized the frequent use of the 1989 Revolution as a political tool. Rado stated that the historical event is often exploited for various political interests and argued that a distinction must be made between the actual revolution and its use in modern political discourse.

The debate highlights ongoing tensions in Timișoara. Following an event titled ‘Timișoara. The Revolution Continues’ organized by USR and Dominic Fritz, local PSD leader Alfred Simonis criticized the use of the Revolution for electoral purposes, asserting that the event belongs to the city rather than specific politicians. Conversely, USR has previously accused the PSD of ‘confiscating the Revolution’ to gain influence in the Timiș region.
