Timișoara to begin urban regeneration in Piața Mocioni
The Timișoara City Hall is set to begin a major urban regeneration project in the historic Iosefin district, covering over 26,000 square meters in the Piața Mocioni area. Starting October 12, 2026, the project aims to transform the zone from a transit-heavy area into a space for relaxation and community gathering.
Key improvements include the expansion of pedestrian zones, the creation of bicycle lanes, and the establishment of dedicated lanes for public transport. The project also involves modernizing utility networks, public lighting, and sidewalks. A central feature of the square will be a new fountain with water and light displays, surrounded by benches and expanded green spaces. Additionally, 68 parking spaces will be provided.
To improve safety and flow, traffic will be reorganized. Vice Mayor Ruben Lațcău noted that the project is designed to work in conjunction with other local infrastructure initiatives like the Green Magistrale and the Solventul Bridge. While one lane per direction will be maintained for cars, the project prioritizes public transit and pedestrians. The first phase of traffic reorganization is expected to last until May 2027, with certain streets, such as Splaiul Nicolae Titulescu, being converted to one-way traffic toward the city center.
