Timipre Sylva resigns from APC amid EFCC fraud probe
Timipre Sylva, the former Governor of Bayelsa State and former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect. In a resignation letter dated August 31, 2026, Sylva, a founding member of the party, cited the abandonment of the APC’s founding ideals and a decline in political decency as his primary reasons for leaving. He described the current state of the party as a “floundering ship” and criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu for disappointing the Nigerian people.
Sylva’s departure coincides with significant legal challenges. He has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with an alleged $14.86 million fraud involving funds from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). Additionally, Sylva is a defendant in a 13-count federal charge involving an alleged plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In response to Sylva’s allegations that the EFCC has acted as a political organ of the ruling APC, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale urged the former governor to make himself available for questioning, noting that he remains a wanted individual.
