Timisoara implements first continental European electric street lighting

In the autumn of 1884, Timisoara became the first city in continental Europe to implement full electric street lighting. At the time, the city was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and had a population of approximately 38,000.

According to historical records from the Temesvarer Zeitung, a trial period took place in November, with the official launch scheduled for December 1. The system illuminated 59 kilometers of streets using 731 lamps, each providing the brightness equivalent to 16 standard candles. The innovation drew international attention, including a delegation from Belgrade.

This advancement preceded similar widespread implementations in other major cities; for instance, Budapest did not establish public utility electricity services until 1893, and its electric street lighting did not become operational until 1909.
