Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road connects Austria and Italy

The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is one of the longest mountain passes in the Alps, spanning approximately 60 kilometers. It connects Hochgurgl in the Austrian Ötztal region to Meran in Italy's Passeier Valley.

The core section of the road reaches a pass height of 2,474 meters. While the entire route is nearly 60 kilometers long, the central segment extends up to 35 kilometers from the toll station in Hochgurgl to Moos in South Tyrol. Due to its high altitude, the road is not passable year-round.

Historically, the Austrian portion of the core section was constructed between 1955 and 1959 as a toll-based private road. On the Italian side, construction began in 1933 as a military road intended for rapid troop deployment, though the final connection to the pass was not completed until 1968. Today, the road is a popular destination for excursionists, particularly motorcyclists and cyclists.
