Timo Vornanen faces parliamentary investigation after criminal conviction

Five Members of Parliament from different political parties have submitted an initiative to the Finnish Parliament to investigate whether Timo Vornanen should be allowed to continue his term in office. The initiative follows a legally binding sentence handed down to Vornanen, who was sentenced to eight months of conditional imprisonment for several offenses, including assault, two unlawful threats, reckless handling, and firearm-related crimes.

The crimes stem from an incident in April 2024 outside a nightclub in Helsinki, involving a warning shot and threats made while intoxicated. Following the verdict, Vornanen resigned from his position at the Eastern Finland Police Department, though he has expressed his intention to remain a Member of Parliament.

The signatories of the initiative include Sandra Bergqvist, Pihla Keto-Huovinen, Matias Mäkynen, Bella Forsgrén, and Mai Kivelä. They argue that Vornanen's actions demonstrate a lack of judgment and undermine public trust in the Parliament. Under the Constitution, the Parliament can investigate a member's status if the convicted individual is deemed not to possess the trust and respect required for the position. This process will first involve the Constitutional Law Committee, and any decision to remove a member would require a two-thirds majority vote.
