Timor-Leste PM Xanana Gusmão visits Indonesia for maritime border talks

Timorese Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão has traveled to Indonesia to participate in the fourth round of negotiations regarding maritime borders. The discussions are scheduled to take place in Jakarta on September 1, 2026.

Delimiting maritime borders with Indonesia is a national priority for Timor-Leste as it seeks to finalize its permanent maritime boundaries, following a 2018 agreement with Australia. The negotiations cover four maritime segments, including the southern coast in the Timor Sea and the northern enclave of Oecussi. Additionally, discussions involve two northern maritime stretches spanning from Batugade to Ataúro Island and through the Wetar Strait to Jaco Island.

This follows previous negotiation rounds held in Dili, Yogyakarta, and Singapore. During his working visit, Gusmão will also visit the Coral Triangle Center in Bali and attend a conference organized by Hasanuddin University.
